Job Summary

The Lead Bus Driver plays a vital role in ensuring safe, timely, and efficient student transportation. This position combines daily driving duties with operational support, staff coordination, and vehicle fleet maintenance support. The ideal candidate serves as a leader and primary liaison among driver personnel, school personnel, and the transportation supervisor—stepping in where needed to keep daily routes running smoothly.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Morning & Daily Operations Coordination

• Morning Parking Lot Oversight: Lead morning parking lot procedures daily, conducting brief check-ins with drivers before buses dispatch to ensure readiness and proper safety protocols.
• Medication Logistics: Securely collect and distribute student medications from school staff to the appropriate bus drivers prior to departure, maintaining complete compliance with district safety and health guidelines.
• Absence & Sub Tracking: Receive call-outs, track driver absences, and actively arrange sub driver coverage each morning.
• Primary Sub & Coverage: Act as the primary backup driver to immediately fill uncovered morning or afternoon routes when substitute drivers are unavailable.

In-Transit Support & Supervisory Assistance

• Floater Bus Monitor: Serve as a mobile bus monitor across all routes as needed, assisting drivers with student management, safety enforcement, and special student needs.
• Route Coverage: Primary responsibility for performing assigned afternoon bus routes safely and on schedule.

 

Fleet Maintenance & Safety Management

• Maintenance Assistance: Assist with basic fleet maintenance duties and routine fleet upkeep.
• Vehicle Issue Reporting: Document and immediately report bus mechanical issues, safety concerns, or repair needs.
• Camera Footage Review: Regularly review bus onboard camera footage to investigate student conduct incidents, verify safety compliance, and support administrative inquiries.

Qualifications & Requirements

• Licensing: Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements.
• Background & Certifications: Safe driving record (clean MVR), clean criminal background check, and current DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate.
• Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of experience as a certified school bus driver (preferred).
• Skills:
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
• Reliable, punctual, and capable of working early morning shifts.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure and handle emergency scheduling adjustments.
• Basic familiarity with fleet vehicles and mechanical safety checks.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

• Must be able to sit for extended periods while operating heavy vehicles.
• Exposure to outdoor weather conditions during early morning and afternoon hours.
• Ability to lift, bend, climb bus steps, and assist students in emergency evacuations if required.
